Elliotte Friedman Drops a Bombshell Concerning an Imminent Canadiens Trade
The famous goaltender situation continues to be a major topic of discussion for the Montreal Canadiens. Although Kent Hughes mentioned this summer that he wanted to find a solution before the start of the season, Martin St-Louis now has to manage three goalies in his lineup, even though the season has been underway for over a month.
In this regard, the excellent Elliotte Friedman provided a very interesting update during his podcast "32 Thoughts" this morning. He firmly believes that Kent Hughes' solution might involve signing Samuel Montembeault, thus giving the organization a better idea of which goalie (Jake Allen or Cayden Primeau) to trade soon.
« The Montreal Canadiens would like to resolve the famous three-goalie situation soon. One of the ways they believe they can do this is by keeping Montembeault. This would give them more certainty because if they keep Montembeault, they can then decide what they want to do with the other two, whether they keep Primeau or Allen. » - Elliotte Friedman
This means that, according to Elliotte Friedman, the Canadiens might wait for Samuel Montembeault to officially sign a contract extension before making a trade involving Cayden Primeau or Jake Allen.
This theory makes a lot of sense, as the Canadiens would be in a tricky situation if they traded Jake Allen and Samuel Montembeault decided to test the free agent market on July 1st.
Part of the solution for Canadiens General Manager Kent Hughes would thus be found. Firstly, he wants to ensure the retention of the Quebec-born goalie before finally deciding which goaltender will leave the organization through a trade.
It's worth noting that, according to several observers, including Arpon Basu and Elliotte Friedman, the Canadiens have already started discussions with Montembeault's camp to offer him a new multi-year deal. This will be an important issue to follow closely over the coming weeks.
