The goaltending situation continues to be a topic of discussion for the Montreal Canadiens. The situation doesn't seem close to resolution, and it's further complicated by the impressive performance of young Cayden Primeau.

His performance against the Detroit Red Wings has opened the eyes of many who thought he should be the one sacrificed by the organization.
One thing seems certain: one of the three goalies will have to leave, and Primeau's performance could tilt the scales towards trading either Jake Allen or Samuel Montembeault.
Martin Lemay made a significant statement about Quebecois goalie Montembeault on the show "On Jase". He suggested that the Canadiens' plan might be to eventually trade him, and his reasoning makes sense.
"Sam is in the last year of his contract. If Sam wanted $2.5 million per year, I think the Canadiens would say yes and sign him. According to information, Samuel Montembeault would want a bit more than Jake Allen, who makes $3.85 million. If you tell Montembeault, I wouldn't give you $4 million, can you afford to lose Primeau on waivers? Can you trade Jake Allen? At the end of the year, it's Montembeault who has no contract, and you're not agreeing with him right now."

This is the first time we're hearing details about Montembeault's salary demands. If it's true that he's asking for a higher salary than Allen next summer, it poses a serious problem.
The Canadiens can't afford to have nearly $8 million in salary cap space tied up in two goalies with a save percentage around 0.900. It would be nonsensical for the management.
Lemay also added this in his statement:
"If Montembeault wants $4 million, what do you do? Because we all agree, at $2.5 million, if both parties agreed, he would already be signed."

This adds a new perspective to the developments with the Canadiens.
So far, expert speculations have revolved around trading Allen because he's older, or Primeau because he's currently the odd one out, but there's less talk about Montembeault, whose contract expires at the end of the season and who may have the best market value due to his current salary.
This will be a situation to monitor over the coming weeks, but everything could hinge on the Canadiens' inability to agree on the terms of a new deal with Montembeault.
