Controversial decision by Gary Bettman: The Panthers no longer have the Cup
The NHL retrieved the Stanley Cup from the hands of the Florida Panthers for a specific reason.
In the midst of victory celebrations, Matthew Tkachuk and his team had to return the trophy, damaged by the festivities.
The League took back the Cup from the Panthers to allow Louise St-Jacques to engrave the names of players and staff on the trophy.
This swift intervention surprised several observers.
Phil Prichard, the Cup's keeper, retrieved it after a night of festivities in Fort Lauderdale and transported it to Montreal.
St-Jacques then proceeded to engrave the names of 52 players and staff members, after repairing and polishing the damaged Cup.
This removal in the midst of celebrations was necessary but unusual.
According to some sources, the Stanley Cup, having suffered significant damage, needed restoration before being returned to the players.
