A controversial hiring of a general manager for the Edmonton Oilers
Despite reaching the Stanley Cup Finals, the Oilers are making a pivotal change in their organizational structure at the crucial position of general manager.
Last season's finalists are expected to officially announce the hiring of Stan Bowman as a replacement for veteran Ken Holland.
Holland and the Oilers have decided to part ways just as he was due to receive a new contract.
Based in Edmonton, the organization took the opportunity to scout for a new general manager, ultimately selecting Stan Bowman for the role.
Bowman had been banned or suspended by the NHL after being involved in a shocking incident with the Blackhawks at the time.
A Blackhawks player, Kyle Beach, had complained about inappropriate advances and questionable comments from the video coach. Stan Bowman and coach Joel Quenneville were made aware, but they chose to cover up the story.
Following an investigation, Bowman and Quenneville were prohibited from working for an NHL team until recently. They have since been cleared by the league to resume employment with a Bettman circuit organization.
Stan Bowman was the GM for the Blackhawks during their Cup victories in 2010, 2013, and 2015 in Chicago.
Scotty Bowman's son will now try to bring the Cup to Edmonton. He faces a significant challenge in managing the future of Leon Draisaitl with the Oilers.
