The two players, longtime friends and teammates with the Calgary Flames, had expressed their excitement about playing together again. Monahan had even mentioned on the podcast 'What Chaos!' how much he looked forward to watching their sons grow up together. Unfortunately, fate had other plans.
To honor his friend, Monahan donated to the wife of Matthew Gaudreau, Johnny's brother, who is pregnant.
The donation amount, $1,300, is quite significant, as a tribute to his former teammate's number 13.
As of this writing, over $200,000 has been raised for Matthew Gaudreau's wife, Madeline.
