Sad news has just been announced regarding Montreal Canadiens prospect Lane Hutson.

Indeed, as you were aware, the 20-year-old defenseman was among the ten players nominated for the prestigious Hobey Baker Award, which is given to the best player in American college hockey.
Knowing that the 62nd overall pick in 2022 once again dominated the NCAA this season with an impressive tally of 15 goals and 34 assists (49 points) in 37 games, this announcement did not surprise fans.
However, in the last few hours, the NCAA has officially confirmed the three finalists for this incredible honor, and despite his exceptional season with Boston University, Lane Hutson's name is not among them.
This decision is truly incomprehensible, to be honest!
Here are the three players who could potentially win this famous trophy:
ˇ Jackson Blake, North Dakota (Carolina Hurricanes prospect)

ˇ Macklin Celebrini, BU (Eligible for this summer's draft)

ˇ Cutter Gauthier, BC (Anaheim Ducks prospect)

Obviously, Macklin Celebrini's name being present is entirely normal. His performances, for a 17-year-old, are simply historic, having recorded 32 goals and 32 assists (64 points) in 37 games this season.
As for Cutter Gauthier, the former fifth overall pick has clearly proven that he has the talent to become a leading forward in the Bettman league, having nearly doubled his offensive contribution compared to the previous season. He finished the campaign with 37 goals and 27 assists (64 points) in 39 games.
However, the choice that is causing a lot of talks and is quite controversial is that of Jackson Blake. Even though he had a good season, the forward plays in a much less competitive division than Macklin Celebrini, Lane Hutson, and Cutter Gauthier.
The fact that a defenseman like Lane Hutson, who is setting records with his monstrous statistics, is not considered among the top three players of the season is really hard to understand. In our opinion, although the future first overall pick fully deserves this distinction, I believe that the Tricolore prospect should have been one of the three finalists.
