In the most recent draft, the Montreal Canadiens' management clearly aimed to address a significant gap within the organization, namely the lack of goaltenders with the potential to fill a number one spot in the coming years.

Indeed, Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton did not hesitate to select three goalies: Jacob Fowler, Quentin Miller, and Yevgeni Volokhin. While the 18-year-old American goalie is currently drawing attention from observers due to his exceptional first season in the collegiate ranks, the potential of Yevgeni Volokhin should not be overlooked.
The Russian goalie is currently dominating in the MHL, the equivalent of junior leagues in Russia. In his first fifteen games with Mamonty Yugry, the six-foot-three goalie compiled a record of nine wins, two losses, and three overtime losses, along with a remarkable goals-against average of 1.57 and a save percentage of 0.937.
It will be very interesting to follow his progression throughout the season, as he seems to be destined for a promising future in the NHL. Notably, the top team in the KHL, SKA Saint Petersburg, offered him a contract during the summer, but the 18-year-old chose to stay with Mamonty Yugry to get quality playing time this year.
This excellent decision could have a very positive impact on his further development!
Mamonty Yugry's goaltending coach, Dimitry Mezencev, recently gave an interview to Nicolas Cloutier of TVA Sports. He is arguably the best person to assess the young Canadiens prospect's talent, having the chance to see him play on a daily basis. He had only praise for his young protégé, highlighting his strength of character and athletic qualities.
"The first quality I liked in him was his mentality. In my opinion, it's a key factor in a goalie's success. Initially, he wasn't very tall, but he was very active in front of his net. Now, he has a great physique and is athletic, in addition to having this strong character." - Dimitry Mezencev

Certainly, it's very encouraging to hear such comments from someone who works closely with him. It's too early to say for sure that Yevgeni Volokhin will become the sought-after number one goalie for the organization, but everything suggests that the Montreal Canadiens have secured a very talented young goalie.
We should keep an eye on his performances in the coming years!
