The Edmonton Oilers' interest in a goaltender from the Montreal Canadiens is not new.

Last summer, Jake Allen's name was heavily rumored in trade talks with the Oilers, but there's been a significant change of events.
Insider Elliotte Friedman seems to have very good sources within the Edmonton organization, as well as close to the goaltender situation in Montreal.
Friedman speaks about the Oilers' interest in the Canadiens' goaltenders (via 32TP): "The Oilers were there to see the 3 Montreal goaltenders play. They've seen them all. I think Allen is the least likely of the 3... I think it's the other two guys (referring to Montembeault and Primeau) that Edmonton is looking at."
So, according to Friedman, Allen is no longer in the picture for a potential trade with the Oilers.
It would now be Samuel Montembeault and Cayden Primeau who are in the sights of GM Ken Holland.
From an external perspective, it's hard to see the Oilers going for an inexperienced goaltender like Primeau. They need someone ready to do the job in the NHL, and Montembeault more closely fits this criterion.
Moreover, considering that the 27-year-old Quebec-born goalie will become a free agent at the end of the season, it's hard to imagine Kent Hughes trading Primeau without assurance of keeping Monty.
This will certainly be a situation to follow over the coming weeks.
