Massive Trade Emerges Sending Top Prospect Matthew Poitras to Montreal
With February just around the corner, things are starting to heat up behind the scenes in the NHL.
Although the trade deadline is set for March 8, it's usually in February that most of the major transactions occur across the league.
Several names are already surfacing on the trade market, including Sean Monahan of the Canadiens, and there are also teams slowly showing their needs for the end of the season.
Surprise in Boston involving the promising young Matthew Poitras?
Apparently, among the teams wishing to make a big move at the trade deadline, there are the Bruins, who would make the talented forward Matthew Poitras available.
Drafted 54th overall in the 2022 draft, he is a center who is already playing in the NHL at 19 years old. He has an impressive record of 15 points in 33 games so far. Last year, he accumulated 95 points in 63 games in the OHL.
The Boston organization would also be one of the teams to watch in the race for Elias Lindholm's services. The Bruins would like to acquire immediate help to solidify their center line. He and Monahan are the two best centers available this year, and both players have nearly identical statistics.
Considering they want to make a big splash, aiming for nothing less than the Stanley Cup, Boston doesn't have much to bargain with to get what they want, apart from Poitras.
This explains why the Bruins would, in all likelihood, be open to trading their young player for an established center. Two journalists explained the situation very well:
"The Bruins won't like parting with Poitras due to his success at 19 in the NHL, but he is one of their few desirable young players." - Corey Pronman
"In Boston, it's a bit thin in terms of draft picks, but the young Matthew Poitras could do the trick." - Jonathan Bernier
This would greatly resemble the type of transaction that Kent Hughes wishes to make to rebuild his team, while betting on an element that can accelerate it.
Frankly, if the Canadiens can get a promising young player like Poitras in return for Monahan, it would be a brilliant move by the general manager.
