Major Trade Coming in the Next Few Hours? A Key NHL Rule Will Force Kent Hughes to Act Quickly
For a few seasons now, the NHL has implemented a new rule in its schedule: the trade freeze, which takes place during the holiday season. This measure aims to allow players to return to their families with peace of mind, knowing they won't be traded soon.
As Chris Johnston rightly points out, this period will extend from December 19 at 11:59 PM (today) to December 28 at 12:01 AM. This means that general managers have until tonight to complete a trade, place a player on waivers, or even demote a member of the organization to the American League.
Moreover, a few weeks ago, during the press conference following Samuel Montembeault's contract extension, Kent Hughes mentioned to journalists that he wished to resolve the famous goalie situation before Christmas. It will be very interesting to see what the CH's general manager decides to do today, as he could potentially trade one of his goalkeepers.
Furthermore, the excellent performance of Jake Allen against the Jets will likely give the Montreal GM additional leverage in hopes of concluding a trade today. Considering that several teams are looking for a second goalie, Kent Hughes could take advantage of this situation to finally end the three-goalie situation.
Even if no trade is completed, we could still witness another personnel move from the Canadiens, as Jordan Harris is quickly approaching a return to play. Indeed, the defenseman traveled with the team for the three games played on opposing rinks.
However, if the team wants to reintegrate him into Martin St-Louis's lineup on Thursday or Friday night, they must necessarily send a player to the Laval Rocket by the end of the day. With David Savard's return, it wouldn't be surprising if Swedish defenseman Gustav Lindstrom is demoted to the American League.
Certainly, this will be a situation to watch over the next few hours!
