Over the past few weeks, several Montreal Canadiens players have been mentioned in various trade rumors as Kent Hughes might part with some veterans, such as Jake Allen, Sean Monahan, and David Savard.

Although Sean Monahan and David Savard are key players in Martin St-Louis's lineup at the moment, both players do not fit with the organization's rebuilding process aimed at rejuvenating the Montreal roster. Moreover, they have very interesting value on the trade market, which could allow Kent Hughes to obtain significant assets for the coming years.
Moreover, according to information recently reported by Rob Ellis, a massive trade involving five elements is being discussed between the general manager of the CH, Kent Hughes, and that of the Oilers, Ken Holland. Indeed, he indicated that a proposal involving prospect Xavier Bourgault, defenseman Cody Ceci, and a second-round pick would be on the table.
"According to what is circulating, David Savard could exchange his Canadiens jersey for one bearing the emblem of the Oilers.

The Edmonton Oilers would offer Cody Ceci, prospect Xavier Bourgault, and a second-round pick in 2024. In return, the Montreal Canadiens would part with David Savard and a fifth-round pick in 2026.

This trade would be beneficial for both teams, aligning with their current objectives and future aspirations." - Rob Ellis

Wow! There's no doubt that this trade could certainly help the Tricolore in the long term.
The Canadiens would add a high-potential prospect in Xavier Bourgault, who was selected 22nd overall in the 2021 draft. Despite a low yield this season (14 points in 32 games), the Quebecer has remarkable offensive skills and could unlock under the guidance of a head coach like Martin St-Louis.
Moreover, the second-round pick would give Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton the possibility of selecting 12 players next June, allowing the organization to continue to stock its prospect pool for the coming years.
As for Cody Ceci, the 30-year-old veteran has been around in the NHL in recent years. Moreover, he is having a good season with 12 assists in 42 games. Earning a salary of $3.25 million until the end of the 2024-2025 season, he could also be traded at the trade deadline to acquire a late-round draft pick.
Here are the elements that could be involved in such a trade:
TO MONTREAL:
- Xavier Bourgault + Cody Ceci + Second-round pick in 2024

TO EDMONTON:
- David Savard + Fifth-round pick in 2026

Of course, the loss of David Savard would hurt the defensive brigade, but knowing that the 33-year-old defenseman is not in the future plans of the Bleu-Blanc-Rouge, the GM of the CH should do everything in his power to maximize his value and get an interesting return while he still attracts so much interest across the NHL.
If you were in Kent Hughes's place, would you accept this exchange?
