As the trade deadline approaches, many questions still linger regarding the intentions of Kent Hughes, the General Manager of the Montreal Canadiens.
Although Hughes has several veterans who are not necessarily part of the organization's long-term plans, such as Tanner Pearson, David Savard, and Jake Allen, fans are curious to see if any of these players will leave the team by March 8th.
However, a trend seems to greatly favor Hughes at the moment, as many teams continue to compete for a playoff spot. This situation would likely increase the number of buyers, thereby decreasing the number of teams willing to sell their players.
"The Leafs, the Wings, the Islanders, the Penguins, the Devils, and the Capitals should all be fighting for a spot in the East. And in the West, the Kings, the Blues, the Preds, the Kraken, the Flames, and the Wild are all reasonably well-positioned. [...] The more teams in the playoff race, the more teams will want to improve by March 8th." - Via Marc-Olivier Cook
This is certainly excellent news for the Canadiens!
With demand increasing and supply decreasing, the Canadiens' GM can use this situation to his advantage to raise his demands and thus obtain a high price for some of his veterans, who should interest many teams looking to strengthen their roster for the playoff run.
Therefore, we might expect a much busier trade deadline than last season for the Bleu-Blanc-Rouge. Apart from the trade involving Russian forwards Evgeny Dadonov and Denis Gurianov concluded a few days before the deadline, Hughes had been relatively quiet.
However, the previous year, he received a very good return by trading veteran Ben Chiarot to the Florida Panthers. It seems likely that the Montreal management could, once again this year, replenish its prospect pool and draft pick collection by parting with some players.
Certainly, March 8th promises to be very interesting, and we are eager to see the personnel moves made by the Canadiens' head pilot.
