Last Friday, the Montreal Canadiens officially traded veteran Sean Monahan to the Winnipeg Jets. As part of this trade, Kent Hughes acquired another first-round pick for 2024 and a third-round pick should Richard Bowness's team win the Stanley Cup this season.
Despite the interesting return, this trade was not unanimously popular since the 29-year-old center was playing excellent hockey since joining the organization. Furthermore, based on comments from his former teammates, Monahan was greatly appreciated in the locker room, with all CH players genuinely disappointed to see him go.
Sean Monahan Returning to the Bleu-Blanc-Rouge This Summer?
Many fans hope he will return to the fold by signing a new deal with the Tricolore this summer, as he will become a free agent on July 1st. In this regard, during a recent podcast with Chris Nilan, Sean Monahan himself mentioned the possibility, stating he would not be against the idea of returning to Montreal for the 2024-2025 season.
Clearly, the former number 91 of the Canadiens enjoyed his time here, indicating he would be open to signing a new contract as a free agent. Imagine if, after acquiring two first-round picks, Sean Monahan decided to sign a new deal with the CH. That would surely be a steal by Kent Hughes!
This will undoubtedly be a situation to monitor closely, especially since General Manager Kent Hughes will have a lot of cap space for the next season.
During his appearance on the podcast of the former Tricolore enforcer, Monahan mentioned he was fully aware of the organization's direction, which could play a significant role in his potential return to Montreal. He knows the team assembled by management has a promising future, and he would like to be part of the team's future success.
It's also worth remembering that Kent Hughes gave him a golden opportunity to revive his career by completing the trade with the Calgary Flames. Furthermore, after a season shortened due to a significant injury, the CH's GM offered him a contract extension so he could prove to the rest of the league that he was still an impactful NHL player. Finally, Hughes traded him to a contending team to give him the chance to win his first Stanley Cup.
The General Manager's actions have clearly not gone unnoticed by Monahan, which could entice him to return to the Tricolore next summer.
If you were in Kent Hughes's shoes, would you offer a three-season contract at an annual salary of five million dollars to Sean Monahan when the free agent market opens?
