In the last few hours, the excellent Jeff Marek disclosed major information about a Montreal Canadiens prospect, Owen Beck, during his podcast "32 Thoughts."
According to Marek, the 33rd overall pick in 2023 could be involved in a significant trade when he returns from the World Junior Championship.
« In the Ontario Hockey League, I think all eyes are on Owen Beck, a second-round pick of the Montreal Canadiens. He plays for Peterborough and it looks like he's on his way out. The Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds could be the favorites to acquire him in a potential trade. » - Jeff Marek
It's not uncommon for junior teams to sacrifice several draft picks and quality prospects to acquire a top forward for the playoffs.
Marek also mentioned that the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds are the favorites to acquire him, ready to pay a high price to add the 19-year-old center to their lineup.
After all, Owen Beck is possibly one of the most complete players in the OHL, doing remarkable work in the defensive zone while contributing significantly on offense.
Despite playing for one of the worst teams in the league, the Peterborough Petes' forward has accumulated 16 goals and 14 assists (30 points) in 25 games so far this season.
It will be fascinating to see if the Canadiens prospect gets traded for the second consecutive year, having been traded by the Mississauga Steelheads last year.
Certainly, Owen Beck is potentially the best two-way center in the Canadiens' system, likely to have a very long NHL career. We're eager to see if he can surprise at the next training camp and force the management to offer him a spot in Martin St-Louis' lineup.
