Future NHL Star Reportedly Blocks Trade to the Canadiens for Ridiculous Reason
Over the past few days, one particular matter has greatly attracted attention across the NHL: the actions of the Anaheim Ducks' new player, Cutter Gauthier.
Indeed, although he was drafted by the Philadelphia Flyers in the fifth round of the 2022 draft, the 19-year-old American forward reportedly made it clear to Daniel Brière that he did not wish to play with the organization. This situation forced the Quebecer to trade him to the Californian team for young defenseman Jamie Drysdale and a second-round pick.
Such a scenario is rather rare. Even though the Boston College left winger has not yet played a single game in the NHL, he already holds a somewhat dubious reputation among the different NHL general managers.
Furthermore, according to information revealed by journalist Charlie O'Connor, the Ducks' prospect was very close to landing in Montreal. According to his sources, the Flyers wanted to acquire the Canadiens' 5th pick in the last draft to select Austrian defenseman David Reinbacher.
However, Kent Hughes ultimately refused this proposal, preferring to add the best defenseman of the 2023 cohort instead of obtaining Cutter Gauthier.
Although the idea of adding a future star forward to play alongside Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, Kirby Dach, and Juraj Slafkovsky might seem interesting, the Montreal management did well not to make this trade, given Gauthier's attitude problem.
However, in the last few hours, Renaud Lavoie revealed major information regarding the young man's demands and the Blue-White-Red. It is rumored that the player, who was selected a few ranks after Juraj Slafkovsky, did not want to play for a Canadian team, as he seemed to have specific requirements regarding his next destination.
"On this subject, journalist Renaud Lavoie mentioned, in a text about the young man, that Gauthier would have refused to sign with a Canadian team. The Canadiens would therefore not have been able to get their hands on him and sign him if they had wanted to.
It is important to remember that Gauthier was offered to the Canadiens during the last draft. The #5 pick, which was used to draft David Reinbacher, was requested in exchange for Gauthier. The Canadiens said no." - Via DansLesCoulisses
As they say, sometimes the best transactions are those that are never completed.
Jeff Gorton and Kent Hughes are currently trying to establish a winning culture with players who want to play for the Canadiens. Adding a forward with a reprehensible attitude certainly does not align with this vision.
Certainly, it will be very interesting to see how his time with the Ducks unfolds, given his current low popularity.
