Bad News for the Montreal Canadiens and Sean Monahan: The Deal May Not Be as Amazing as Many Anticipated
In the NHL, attention is now focused on the Montreal Canadiens and Sean Monahan as the next major trade.
With the monster trade confirmed yesterday involving Elias Lindholm, Kent Hughes now has the green light to secure the biggest possible return and drive up the bidding for the services of number 91.
However, this significant move by the Calgary Flames could have important repercussions for the CH, not all of which are entirely positive.
Indeed, when the Tricolore acquired Monahan, a first-round pick in 2025 was also part of the trade to absorb his contract, which was subject to several conditions.
The departure of Lindholm, which is the first of several others in Calgary, has just announced a possible verdict on the choice obtained in the Monahan trade.
Here's what the excellent Grant McCagg had to say about it:
"CGY trading Lindholm only further illustrates that the Tricolore will likely receive the FLA first-round pick in 2025. The Flames are likely to be among the bottom ten teams next season, and if that's the case, the FLA pick will go to MTL. I'm not sure what will happen if FLA ends up in the bottom ten."
As he points out, since the Flames are very likely to be among the ten worst clubs in the league next year, the first-round pick obtained by the CH is highly likely to become that of the Panthers.
Where is the problem here?
Florida is one of the best teams in the league this year, with a record of 31-14-4. Unless there are several significant departures and an unexpected decline next season, it would be surprising to see the Panthers' pick in the top-20 of the 2025 draft class.
In other words, it will lose a lot of value compared to if the Flames ended up with a pick outside the top-10 next year, the Tricolore would get the better option between the Flames' and Panthers' pick.
It will be interesting to see if the turn of events will prompt Kent Hughes to trade this pick, sooner rather than later, in a major transaction.
