The Panthers lifted the Stanley Cup, but the Conn Smythe Trophy was awarded to the top scorer of the playoffs, the dominant Connor McDavid.
Without much surprise, even though the Oilers did not complete their brilliant comeback in Game 7, #97 won the title of the most valuable player in the playoffs despite being on the losing side.
Controversy ensued as McDavid chose to stay in the Oilers' locker room rather than come onto the ice to pose with the trophy before receiving it.
Some fans and journalists view this gesture as disrespectful towards this legendary trophy.
The votes of the 17 media representatives who have a vote for the Conn Smythe have also been heavily criticized since their publication.
Only one journalist did not give his first-place vote to McDavid. Another from Edmonton awarded all three of his votes to Oilers players, including Zach Hyman.
Another surprise was Sergei Bobrovsky finishing fourth in the rankings, despite many believing he would be the Panthers' candidate, even though everyone knew the trophy would go to McDavid.
Here are all the votes:
Connor McDavid, Edmonton: 83 points Aleksander Barkov, Florida: 46 points Gustav Forsling, Florida: 8 points Sergei Bobrovsky, Florida: 7 points Zach Hyman, Edmonton: 3 points Evan Bouchard, Edmonton: 2 points Stuart Skinner, Edmonton: 2 points Carter Verhaeghe, Florida: 2 points
