MAJOR: 900-Game NHL Veteran Available to Kent Hughes for Free
In the frenzy of yesterday's events, where numerous trades were finalized across the NHL, there was a surprise waiver submission by the Philadelphia Flyers.
Freshly traded from the Colorado Avalanche in the Sean Walker deal, Ryan Johansen was sent to Philly, accompanied by a first-round pick.
However, his time with the new organization might be short-lived, as he was immediately placed on waivers by GM Daniel Brière.
It's noteworthy that Johansen has another year left on his contract at $4 million per season.
An opportunity for the Canadiens to claim Johansen
Given that Kirby Dach and Dvorak are injured and Sean Monahan has been traded, the team's center line is far from glorious with Alex Newhook, Colin White, and Jake Evans behind Nick Suzuki.
Even White was injured a few days ago, and now Rafaël Harvey-Pinard, who has never played center, was used in this position during the last game.
The Canadiens currently only have three true centermen in their lineup, which is far from optimal.
Will Kent Hughes dare to take a chance on reviving an enigmatic player like Johansen?
After all, Johansen amassed 63 points, including 26 goals, in 79 games in 2022. He still has significant offensive talent that he could rediscover at any time.
Ryan Johansen over Christian Dvorak?
The arrival of the 4th overall pick from the 2010 draft could immediately help the CH this season, and it might also allow Hughes to trade Dvorak's services over the summer.
Dvorak and Johansen each have another year left on their current deals, but between the two, Dvorak has the higher market value.
So, why not move number 28 during the offseason, and try to revive Johansen to gain an additional asset by the next trade deadline?
It could be a good option for the Canadiens.
