Cayden Primeau and a second-round pick: major revelation emerges
Significant and very interesting new information has surfaced regarding young goaltender Cayden Primeau of the Montreal Canadiens.
It has been revealed that the organization held the American goaltender in high regard at the time of his draft, to the extent that the team believed they had made a steal during the draft.
No fewer than 20 goaltenders were chosen in that draft before Primeau, but the Canadiens' amateur scouting department had him as high on their draft list as the second round, and he was ranked third among goaltenders in the cohort. Wow!
«But what you need to know about the 2017 draft, is that the Canadiens had Cayden Primeau in the second round of their mock draft. They had him ranked third, behind Jake Oettinger and Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen. And we agree, those are not slouches.» - Raphael Simard
What's fascinating about this revelation is that he had to wait until the end of the seventh round (199th overall) before hearing his name called by the Canadiens, who didn't even have a selection in that round initially.
«Primeau, 24 years old, was drafted with the 199th overall pick (in the 7th round) of the 2017 draft.
But in 2017, the Canadiens did not have a seventh-round pick.
Indeed, it was thanks to a trade with the Flyers that Montreal was able to acquire this 199th overall pick and thus draft Cayden Primeau.»
It was also learned that, in that year, the Canadiens did not want to draft a goaltender. They already had Carey Price (at the peak of his career), Charlie Lindgren, and Zachary Fucale, among others.
However, during the last selections of 2017, the CH management was compelled to act upon seeing the golden opportunity represented by Primeau's slide, who was a second-round pick in their eyes, fall so far in the draft.
The management eventually caved to make a minor trade and thus acquire the son of Keith Primeau. This completely unforeseen decision is now paying off significantly for the organization.
This shows that even a late seventh-round pick should never be taken lightly.
