Analyst Believes Kent Hughes Has Acquired the Next Adam Fox
Since Kent Hughes took over as General Manager of the Montreal Canadiens, there has been a lot of praise for the team's prospect pool, particularly in defense. Many believe that the Canadiens could have one of the best defensive brigades in the NHL in a few seasons.
The early selection of David Reinbacher last year is expected to bolster the right side of the defense, which already includes talented young players like Justin Barron, Logan Mailloux, and Bogdan Konyushkov.
On the left side, the Canadiens can look forward to the emergence of players like Kaiden Guhle, Jayden Struble, Arber Xhekaj, and Adam Engstrom. Additionally, Lane Hutson is anticipated to have a promising future in the NHL, currently dominating in the collegiate ranks with Boston University.
Since joining Boston University, the 2022 second-round pick has impressed NHL scouts, accumulating an impressive total of 24 goals and 47 assists (71 points) in 56 games. His astounding statistics have caught the attention of Montreal fans, breaking several NCAA records.
Comparisons have been drawn between Hutson and NHL stars like Cale Makar of the Colorado Avalanche and Quinn Hughes of the Vancouver Canucks. However, during his appearance on "The Sick Podcast With Tony Marinaro," Pierre McGuire made an interesting comparison, likening Hutson to New York Rangers defenseman Adam Fox.
"The creativity in his offensive game is stunning. [...] The more I see Lane Hutson play, the more I see a future Adam Fox. I watched Adam Fox train and play with Harvard, so I know his style very well, and they are very similar types of players. Offensively, their ability to read the game is incredibly similar." - Pierre McGuire
Sportsnet analyst Pierre McGuire believes Hutson's style of play is more akin to that of Adam Fox, which is particularly insightful considering McGuire's familiarity with Fox's play at Harvard University.
Collegiate statistics comparison:
Lane Hutson
ˇ First year in NCAA: 15 goals and 33 assists in 39 games
ˇ Second year in NCAA: 9 goals and 14 assists in 17 games
Adam Fox
ˇ First year in NCAA: 6 goals and 34 assists in 35 games
ˇ Second year in NCAA: 6 goals and 22 assists in 29 games
Hutson's offensive production in college is quite similar, even slightly superior, to Fox's.
This comparison is promising, especially considering the Rangers defenseman is on track to reach the 70-point mark for a third consecutive season, boasting 265 points in 329 NHL games.
Of course, despite his NCAA success, there's no guarantee that Hutson, the 62nd overall pick in 2022, will replicate these achievements in the NHL. However, he undoubtedly has high potential and could become a steal for the Canadiens if he manages to emulate Adam Fox.
