Cole Caufield Fires Shots at Gary Bettman
Following a tough 6-2 loss to the Ottawa Senators last night, Montreal Canadiens forward Cole Caufield did not mince words when expressing his views on the NHL's scheduling, particularly the "back-to-back" games when playing away.
Caufield openly shared his thoughts on this grueling aspect of the NHL schedule, which evidently is not popular among players, as per backstage talk. He pointed out the challenge of this workload but expressed skepticism about any potential changes, given what he perceives as NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman's indifference.
"The back-to-backs on the road are not ideal, but the league doesn't care... so it's up to us to be better." - Cole Caufield
Caufield's point is understandable. The Canadiens had arrived in Ottawa in the early hours of Thursday morning, having just played against the Devils. Despite having played the previous day, they were back on the ice less than 24 hours later to face the Senators.
This scenario likely explains why Martin St-Louis's team appeared lethargic and lacked the energy to compete with the Senators.
It's a situation the league might need to reconsider, especially for teams playing on opponent's ice on consecutive nights. Hopefully, Caufield's comments will reach Gary Bettman and reignite this important debate.
On the bright side, Caufield has been on a scoring streak, marking goals in four consecutive games, flourishing offensively alongside Nick Suzuki and Juraj Slafkovsky.
"It feels good to score, for sure, but I wish I could have done more to get the win." - Cole Caufield
After a challenging stretch where Caufield had only two goals and four assists in 15 games, the young forward is back to his regular form. Caufield has tallied 14 points, including 8 goals, in his last 15 games, bringing his season total to 34 points.
