The arrival of Craig Berube appears to promise a change, but yesterday we learned that Guy Boucher, the team's assistant coach, would not continue with the Leafs.
According to Elliotte Friedman in the latest episode of the "32 Thoughts Podcast," new information sheds light on Boucher's decision not to return to Toronto.
"I believe Boucher mentioned that if a coaching change were to happen, he would have liked to be a candidate. I'm not sure how serious Toronto was about that request or if he was even a candidate." - E. Friedman
Upon Berube's appointment as head coach of the Leafs, some advised Friedman to closely monitor Boucher's and the organization's reactions.
It's important to note that Boucher doesn't have a close relationship with Brad Treliving, which certainly influenced the decision of the management.
Friedman suggests that while it's not a big surprise, it's legitimate to wonder if Boucher was considered a candidate for the head coaching position.
If Boucher wasn't even considered for this role, it's understandable that he chose not to return to Toronto as an assistant coach, especially if he aspires to a more prominent role behind the bench.
Boucher has expressed his desire to return to a coaching position, but certainly not as an assistant.
