A major development seems to be on the horizon regarding this summer's biggest upcoming free agent, William Nylander.

According to a recent report by renowned insider Nick Kypreos of Sportsnet, negotiations for an extension of the Swedish forward's contract with the Maple Leafs are going very well.
In fact, Kypreos asserts that there's a good chance of reaching an agreement by the end of the All-Star Weekend in early February.
« I just want to talk about William Nylander. It's shaping up that the Leafs and William will find common ground, from what I've heard.

The general feeling from both parties is that they would like the deal to be done before the All-Star break on February 3.

Another detail that's circulating is that the annual amount of this contract will be over $11M for 8 years. $11.25M is the figure that makes the most sense. » - Nick Kypreos

It's even reported that Toronto might be ready to invest the astronomical sum of $11.25M for number 88. This is quite astounding, especially considering that the organization is already spending over $10M annually on three other players: Auston Matthews, John Tavares, and Mitch Marner.
Fortunately for the Leafs, the salary cap will increase by $4M, going from $83.5M to $87.5M next year. Nevertheless, with Nylander's potential new signing, the organization will allocate over 53% of its salary cap to four players.
This is absolutely staggering!
