Several Canadiens Scouts Believe Yevgeni Volokhin is the Future Star Starter of the Team
As you know, the Montreal Canadiens aimed to address a significant weakness of the team during the last draft. Indeed, Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton selected three goaltenders in the hope of finally finding a true number one for the coming years.
Of course, many observers have discussed the huge potential of Jacob Fowler, who had an exceptional season in the NCAA. In his first year in the collegiate ranks, the 19-year-old American goaltender compiled a record of 27-5-1 with a goals-against average of 2.23 and a save percentage of .923, earning him a spot on the Hockey East All-Star team.
However, even if fans sometimes tend to forget, the Canadiens also added a young Russian prospect named Yevgeni Volokhin with their fifth-round pick. The 18-year-old goalie is currently playing with Mamonty Yugry in the MHL, the equivalent of the junior ranks in Russia.
Despite his young age, Volokhin received several offers from the KHL, including one from SKA Saint Petersburg, but he preferred to remain in juniors to get more playing time for continued development. A decision that paid off, as the goalie had an incredible season this year.
Indeed, the 144th overall pick in 2023 recorded 22 wins, 4 losses, and 4 overtime losses, while posting a goals-against average of 1.57 and a save percentage of .938. Although the MHL is an offensive league where many goals are scored, his statistics are simply astounding.
Even if his regular season was frankly impressive, Yevgeni Volokhin is outperforming himself in the playoffs currently. The goaltender won both of his starts, with a remarkable goals-against average of 0.61 and a save percentage of .975.
Wow! That's really extraordinary!
Furthermore, according to comments made by journalist Marc Antoine Godin, the Montreal Canadiens have very high expectations for the Russian goaltender. He specifically revealed that, according to his information, some members of the Canadiens organization believe that Yevgeni Volokhin could have a higher potential than Jacob Fowler.

Many observers believe that the Boston College goalie is potentially one of the best goaltending prospects, so imagine if Yevgeni Volokhin is even more promising. This speaks volumes about the young man's talent, and it's certainly a very good sign for the future of the Bleu-Blanc-Rouge.
Certainly, with Samuel Montembeault, Cayden Primeau, Jacob Fowler, and Yevgeni Volokhin, the organization is in good hands to find the future successor to Carey Price. Let's hope that the CH's prospects can reach their full potential and eventually become key elements in the team's success.
