We've just learned intriguing information regarding defenseman Justin Barron.
While the St. Louis Blues were visiting the Bell Centre last Sunday, the team's general manager, Doug Armstrong, took the opportunity to give a very interesting gift to Samuel Montembeault.
The man who also served as Team Canada's GM at the last World Championship presented the Canadiens' goaltender with a ring for winning the gold medal.
However, Monty wasn't the only representative of the Canadiens who wore the maple leaf last May, as Justin Barron was also part of the roster. The Montreal organization had taken care to offer the young defenseman the opportunity to be in Montreal on Sunday to receive his ring, but he was not present.
As reported by Charles-Alexis Brisebois, Barron declined the offer from the Canadiens.
"[Barron] is currently not in the NHL: he is down. And at the time of the Blues' visit, Barron was in Toronto with the Rocket.
That being said, it's important to mention that the Canadiens gave Barron the chance to come back to Montreal for Sunday's game to receive his championship ring in person.
And as Arpon Basu (The Athletic) tells us, the main interested party said no." - via DLC.com
Although at first glance, this decision by the 22-year-old defenseman seems questionable, Basu states that there's a very good reason explaining Barron's reasoning:
"But the reason deserves to be highlighted, as it says a lot about his commitment while he was playing in the AHL with the Laval Rocket. The Canadiens, who brought Joshua Roy back from Toronto on Saturday so he could play on Sunday after Rafaël Harvey-Pinard's injury against the Dallas Stars. They gave the same option to Barron because Armstrong would be there to deliver his ring. The organization thought it was important to give Barron the chance to receive this ring in person." - Arpon Basu
It's understood that Barron preferred to honor his commitments with the farm team, rather than leave the team to receive this ring at the same time as Montembeault.
This says a lot about the young man's involvement and seriousness with the Rocket, even though he must be disappointed to have returned to Laval after starting the year with the CH.
