Buyout this summer? Kent Hughes has confirmed it
Following a highly emotional season, Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton addressed Montreal journalists to deliver their end-of-year review, revealing several interesting pieces of information.
Among the topics discussed was the possibility of the Montreal Canadiens' general manager executing a contract buyout during the offseason. Naturally, two names immediately come to mind: forwards Josh Anderson and Brendan Gallagher, whose annual salaries are not in line with their offensive production.
Indeed, number 17, Josh Anderson, had the worst season of his career with a meager total of nine goals and eleven assists (20 points) in 78 games. Despite having numerous opportunities in the top-6, the 29-year-old forward was never able to find his stride, having previously "flirted" with the 20-goal mark in his last three seasons.
As for Gally, the diminutive forward did not perform badly this season. For the first time in five years, number 11 remained healthy all year, and had it not been for a five-game suspension, he would have played all 82 games.
He still concluded the season with 16 goals and 15 assists (31 points), including 10 points in his last 9 games. His contribution was significant to Martin St-Louis's squad; he always gives his maximum effort, but unfortunately, this does not justify his lucrative salary of $6.5 million.
The end for Josh Anderson with the Canadiens? A verdict has just been reached!
In this context, some observers were convinced that the general manager of the Bleu-Blanc-Rouge might proceed with a contract buyout this summer. However, Kent Hughes caused some surprise by firmly indicating that he would not consider this option in the coming weeks.
"Kent Hughes clearly says 'No' when asked if we can expect any contract buyouts this summer." - Patrick Friolet
This matter is now settled, Josh Anderson and Brendan Gallagher will indeed be members of the Tricolore when the 2024-2025 season kicks off!
Honestly, I believe it's a good decision regarding Brendan Gallagher. The veteran is an important player in the locker room, and his impeccable attitude is a perfect example for the rest of his teammates. Moreover, every time he hits the ice, he plays as if it's his last game, with incredible passion and intensity.
On the other hand, it's the complete opposite for Josh Anderson. His level of effort has been criticized repeatedly this season, and his place in the lineup prevents some younger players from having more significant opportunities. He is increasingly becoming a burden for Martin St-Louis, and his departure would have opened doors for more deserving forwards, but we can still understand why the CH GM does not wish to buy him out, as it would have significant financial repercussions on the future of the organization.
Do you think the Montreal Canadiens should consider the possibility of buying out Josh Anderson's contract?
