In the last few hours, TVA Sports journalist Renaud Lavoie announced a rather surprising news regarding the Montreal Canadiens' number one goaltender, Samuel Montembeault.
Indeed, the 27-year-old Quebecer did not accompany his teammates to Philadelphia for tonight's game against the Flyers. Instead, the goalie stayed in Montreal with the goaltenders' coach, Éric Raymond, to prepare for the game against the Sharks at the Bell Centre tomorrow.
While the three-goalie system presents certain drawbacks, it allows the Canadiens to keep one of their goaltenders in Montreal so that he is in better condition for his next game. This is certainly good news for the CH, as Montembeault won't have to travel overnight tonight.
Moreover, this announcement seems to confirm that number 35 will play his 19th game this year tomorrow night, having recorded an impressive record of nine wins, five losses, and three overtime defeats in 2023-2024.
Certainly, Samuel Montembeault is clearly demonstrating to the management that he deserved a contract extension, having apparently taken over the role of number one in the organization. He is having an excellent season with a goals-against average of 2.96 and a save percentage of 0.906, the best statistics of his career.
