Sean Monahan Sends a Very Clear Message to GM Kent Hughes
Kent Hughes pulled off a masterstroke with the acquisition of Sean Monahan last year. In addition to receiving a first-round draft pick for free alongside the veteran, the latter has been delivering exceptional services to the Canadiens.
After an interesting season, but a regrettable injury that made him miss almost three-quarters of the last year, the centerman decided to extend his stay in Montreal, at a low cost, to showcase his capabilities.
This signing is turning to gold for the Canadiens, as Monahan is clearly one of, if not the best player on the team since the start of the season.
He has accumulated nine points, including six goals, in 10 games. He is the top scorer for the club with two more goals than Cole Caufield. He is currently in excellent form and is delivering outstanding performances at every level of play.
His versatile play, combined with his excellence in faceoffs and his leadership, are invaluable assets that Martin St-Louis is currently benefiting from greatly.
Given that he will need to re-sign a contract at the end of the season, some wonder if the plan might be to trade him and capitalize on his maximum value around the trade deadline, provided he continues to play this way and remains healthy.
One thing is clear, the man in question loves the city and the organization. In an interview with Sportsnet's Eric Engels, the Canadiens' number 91 sent a strong message to his GM, expressing his wish to settle down long-term in Montreal.
Of course, everything could hinge on the terms of a new contract. Even though he's currently exceeding expectations, his extensive injury history hasn't magically disappeared. He comes with the risk of fragility, which should make Hughes wary about an extension.
If the 29-year-old veteran would agree to a three or four-year deal, ranging between $3.5M to $4M annually, I wouldn't object. If it's for a longer term or at a higher price, the risk dangerously escalates.
Would you want Kent Hughes to extend Sean Monahan's contract?
