Last-Minute Announcement on Arber Xhekaj's Injury Status
The Montreal Canadiens held their last practice at the Nationwide Arena this afternoon in preparation for tomorrow night's game against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Many fans were eager to find out if Arber Xhekaj would be on the ice with his teammates, as there was speculation he might potentially return to play in the last game of the road trip.
Indeed, recall that during his appearance on BPM Sports yesterday morning, Renaud Lavoie mentioned that we should expect number 72 to return to play on Wednesday if everything went as planned.
"« We should expect Xhekaj to return to play as early as this Wednesday against the Columbus Blue Jackets if all goes well. » - Renaud Lavoie"
Unfortunately, much to the dismay of Montreal fans, the defenseman was absent from the training, suggesting that he will not be able to rejoin Martin St-Louis's lineup against the Blue Jackets.
Moreover, the organization still counts seven defensemen (Mike Matheson, Kaiden Guhle, Justin Barron, Jonathan Kovacevic, Jayden Struble, Gustav Lindstrom, and Mattias Norlinder) with the main team at the moment. Since the Canadiens have not sent a player to the Laval Rocket, it seems likely that Arber Xhekaj will be kept out of the game tomorrow night.
"« Before the rest of the group took to the ice, Josh Anderson, Joel Armia, and Michael Pezzetta did additional exercises with Canadiens hockey development director Adam Nicholas. At the other end, Jake Evans and Jesse Ylönen practiced shooting against the three goalies, Jake Allen, Samuel Montembeault, and Cayden Primeau.
Twenty-three players laced up their skates. » - Montreal Canadiens"
It appears that we will have to wait a bit longer to see the Sheriff in the CH lineup. He may be able to face the Florida Panthers at the Bell Centre on Thursday night, or we might have to wait until Saturday against the Detroit Red Wings.
Note that the defenseman has not played in a game since November 16 due to a solid check from Ivan Barbashev.
