Alex Meruelo, owner of the Coyotes, had signed an agreement with the NHL granting him five years to build a new arena in Arizona and secure an expansion franchise.
Last night, Craig Morgan of GoPHNX reported that Meruelo, out of plans, decided to abandon the project. As a result, the Arizona Coyotes, as we knew them, cease to exist.
However, this does not necessarily mean the end of hockey in Arizona. According to Morgan, at least two other groups are interested in bringing an NHL team back to the region.
As Bill Daly, deputy commissioner of the NHL, mentioned, these new owners would be treated like any other city applying for an expansion franchise.
