The Next Starting Goaltender for the Montreal Canadiens: Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton Appear to Have Found Him in NCAA Phenom Jacob Fowler
Of all the goalies in the Montreal Canadiens' system, Jacob Fowler is likely at the top of the list right now to become the Canadiens' #1 netminder. Before his draft, The Athletic's journalist, Scott Wheeler, expressed concerns about the goalie's physical condition but believed in his potential.
"He has some work to do in other areas (physical conditioning), but he has evident skills, notably good hands, an ability to cut down angles with precise positioning, and a strong game reading and anticipation ability," remarked Scott Wheeler of The Athletic.
He was deemed a bit overweight for an athlete of this caliber. At his draft, he weighed close to 223 pounds. The 6-foot-2 goaltender doubled his efforts this summer and followed a nutritional plan suggested by the Montreal Canadiens staff. The results were outstanding, both regarding his physical condition and his body fat percentage. He lost 17 pounds and now weighs 206.
In an interview with Kevin Dubé of TVA Sports, he confirmed the results.
"I worked hard this summer in the gym to get leaner and quicker. It allows me to be more explosive and make stops I couldn't before," said Jacob Fowler.
Fowler had to adjust his diet to better match the nutritional needs of the athlete he is.
"It's nothing super different, but it's mainly about balance. In the NCAA, you can't eat steak every night! I can still eat the things I love, but I also have to add less tasty things like zucchini," Fowler added.
The Boston College Eagles goaltender is off to a great start this season. After 8 games, he has a record of 7 wins and 1 loss with a save percentage of .923% and a 2.12 average. His goalie coach, Mike Ayers, only had praise for his first-year netminder.
"He works hard and is very focused on his goals. He wants to know every detail about the opponent, whether it's by asking questions or doing a lot of video to understand each of the opposing team's player tendencies. His preparation is exceptional," stated Mike Ayers.
If he continues at this pace, the Canadiens might have made a great pick with their 3rd round selection in 2023!
To add to his brilliant start, his outstanding performances earned him the October goaltender of the month award in the Hockey East section, a well-deserved accolade that showcases the full extent of his talent and promising potential.
