The Next Brad Marchand Already Drafted by the Montreal Canadiens? The 5 foot 6 Standout Xavier Simoneau is Proving He Has a Very Bright Future in the NHL
It's rare to expect a big hit with late draft picks, but the Montreal Canadiens may have made a significant acquisition with their sixth-round pick in 2021, the small Xavier Simoneau.
Always, despite his stature of 5 feet 6 inches, the 22-year-old Quebecer silences his critics due to his versatility on the ice, his ability to produce offensively, but especially thanks to his playing style reminiscent of a certain player hated by fans of the Tricolore, Brad Marchand.
Even if he's not the strongest, Simoneau is fearless and never hesitates to take on opponents almost twice his size. He is aggressive, combative, and determined to always push his limits.
After a fruitful stint in juniors, where he collected an impressive 314 points in 252 games, in his first season with the Laval Rocket last year, he amassed 38 points in 62 games.
However, what is more noteworthy is that he went from a depth forward at the start of the campaign to one of his coach Jean-François Houle's trusted men, all in the span of one season.
This year, after 15 games, he has a total of 10 points, including three goals. He is the fourth scorer of the Rocket team, with a few fewer games played than some.
He is seriously shopping for a call-up with the Montreal Canadiens this season, and with the pace of injuries accumulating in the lineup, it wouldn't be surprising if that happens sooner rather than later.
