Massive Surprise: Young Laval Rocket Star Appears to Be Ready to Sign an NHL Contract and Join the Canadiens
Once again this season, the Montreal Canadiens are significantly affected by numerous injuries, as four regular forwards, namely Kirby Dach, Alex Newhook, Rafael Harvey-Pinard, and now Tanner Pearson, will have to be sidelined for several weeks.
Given that Martin St-Louis currently has only 12 forwards in his lineup, it wouldn't be surprising if Kent Hughes felt compelled to make a recall or announce a signing in the coming hours. Moreover, although many fans would love to see Joshua Roy with the main club, the organization prefers him to continue his development in the American League this season.
So, which player could come in to bolster the Montreal attack?
In the past few hours, Anthony Marcotte has suggested a solid option that could very well materialize, possibly as early as today. According to him, if the Canadiens wish to keep their young prospects with the Laval Rocket, forward Brandon Gignac could be an excellent choice.
"Brandon Gignac is closer than ever to obtaining an NHL contract with the Canadiens. He has greatly improved his consistency, has become a more reliable player in his own territory, and remains a threatening speedster. He is now the 10th top scorer in the AHL.
If the CH wants to continue letting its younger players develop below, it will have no choice but to consider a veteran like Gignac if injuries keep piling up. It would be a great story if he managed to sign in the NHL after two and a half seasons in Laval." - Anthony Marcotte
However, given that the Quebec forward only holds a one-way contract (AHL), he would need to sign a new deal with the Canadiens to join the team soon. Now 26 years old, the center player could finally get an opportunity to play in the Bettman circuit, having played only one game with the New Jersey Devils in 2018-2019.
Having joined the Rocket two and a half years ago, Brandon Gignac is having an excellent season with a tally of 7 goals and 15 assists (22 points) in 23 games, ranking notably as the 10th top scorer in the AHL.
In your opinion, should the CH's general manager offer him a contract to bring him up to the main club?
