Progression and development are what make the nature of the draft so unpredictable.

Obviously, the earlier a team selects, the more likely they are to land an exceptional talent, but it's never a certainty. In addition, every draft has hidden gems who slip through and become home runs a few years later.
The Canadiens had a recent success, with the selection of Joshua Roy as far back as the fifth round. Following his draft, the progress of the Quebecer, who was three weeks shy of being part of the 2022 class, was meteoric.
2021-22: 119 points in 66 games with the Sherbrooke Phoenix, top scorer of the QMJHL
2022-23: 99 points in 55 games with the Sherbrooke Phoenix, gold medal at the Junior World Championship
2023-24: First pro season with the Laval Rocket - 12 points in seven games
He is now ranked third in scoring in the AHL in his first season, with two games in hand over the first two.
«The Beauce Sniper has collected 11 points (12) in his first five (seven) games in the AHL, which is impressive in itself, but when you look closer at his work with the Laval Rocket, the way Roy has produced these points is also very encouraging.» - Marc Dumont

If we were to redo his draft year, Roy would definitely go in the first round, and possibly even in the top-15. What a steal by the Canadiens when we remember that he was chosen only at 150th overall.
Moreover, when taking into account the advanced statistics of the PNHLe, one of the reputable databases used by NHL teams, the young talent of the Tricolore is currently at the top of the rankings. He is even outperforming a certain Matvei Michkov, who is seen as a future generational talent.
We are aware that Roy has not yet played a single game in the NHL. However, it must still be put into context that what the 20-year-old man is accomplishing is frankly astonishing and very promising for the future.
