In a few days, it will have been two years since Kent Hughes took up the position of general manager with the Montreal Canadiens.
The former player agent is carrying out an unprecedented rebuilding effort in the franchise's recent history, following many disappointing years for the organization.
Since his arrival with the Canadiens, he has orchestrated several important trades that, so far, have been quite beneficial for the team for the most part. We can think of the acquisitions of Kirby Dach, Michael Matheson, and Alex Newhook, as well as the departures of Tyler Toffoli, Ben Chiarot, and Jeff Petry, which have yielded interesting returns.
However, the trade that is likely to become one of the best moves of his career is undoubtedly the addition of Sean Monahan in the summer of 2022.
Hughes acquired the veteran, along with a first-round pick in 2025, in exchange for absorbing the last year of his salary at $6.375 million.
Considering that the club had the cap space for Monahan, it was an excellent move by the GM. But the impact of this move doesn't stop there.
After a promising first season that ended prematurely with an unfortunate injury, Hughes managed to convince Monahan to sign for one season with the Canadiens, so he could prove he was back in health to hit the jackpot in the summer of 2024.
With a tally of 11 goals and 31 points after 46 games, in addition to everything he brings on and off the ice, the 29-year-old player is about to bring a huge return to the Canadiens.
As noted by renowned insider Frank Seravalli, Monahan will soon bring another first-round pick to the Montreal organization.
"When all is said and done, #GoHabsGo should end up with 2 first-round picks for Sean Monahan.
One to take him off the #Flames, another for his play now."
In other words, with the upcoming trade of Monahan in a few weeks, Kent Hughes will have acquired two first-round picks in return for absolutely nothing. This is possibly one of the biggest steals in recent NHL history.
