It's no longer a secret in the hockey world that the Edmonton Oilers are desperately seeking a goaltender to address their significant shortcomings in net.

As repeatedly reported by NHL insiders like Elliotte Friedman, Frank Seravalli, and Darren Dreger yesterday, a trade is being worked out between the Oilers and the Montreal Canadiens involving a goaltender.
Friedman recently reported that Ken Holland had asked Kent Hughes for clarifications on contract negotiations with Samuel Montembeault, indicating which of the three Canadiens goalies the Alberta organization is targeting.
Similarly, Dreger mentioned in recent hours that Holland was looking at the Quebecois goaltender and that the price to be paid could bring a substantial return to the Canadiens.
Regarding Monty's infamous price, Mark Spector, a well-known journalist from Edmonton, revealed some very interesting details about the current situation. Knowing that the Oilers have seriously negotiated with the CH for the Quebecois goalie, here's what he disclosed:
"So, Edmonton is seriously involved in the goalie trade market, but they are desperate. Teams know this and the prices are ridiculously high. Can Skinner hold the fort until someone makes a reasonable trade offer? If he can't, is Holland forced to buckle and overpay for a number 2? That's where we are."

In addition to stating that Edmonton was very active in the market right now to find a solution in net, it's also understood that Hughes would demand a high return for Montembeault's services.
Although the Canadiens are not the only team that has negotiated with the Oilers, Spector states that all have ridiculously high prices, which certainly includes the Montreal organization.
According to what is being said, Hughes would like to keep number 35 with the Canadiens, but due to his contractual status and the fact that he will need a high-priced contract extension at the end of the season, if the return is substantial for him, it's clear that as a good GM, he is currently exploring all possible options.
This matter is likely to gain more traction in the coming weeks.
