With the recent significant announcement regarding Christian Dvorak, who will have to miss the rest of the season after playing only 25 games, a striking realization of failure is felt in relation to his acquisition.

During his appearance on BPM Sports, Mathias Brunet recalls how Marc Bergevin made a major blunder with the trade of the 27-year-old forward in 2021.
"Marc Bergevin acted in reaction to the loss of Danault and Kotkaniemi, and he overpaid to fill a gap in 2021-2022, believing he still had a competitive team, while Price and Weber were at the end of their tether. He overestimated his team." - Mathias Brunet

It's always easier to analyze such major moves in hindsight, but even at the time of the trade, few experts thought it was a good move for the Canadiens.
Recall that the former GM offered a first-round pick in 2022, as well as a second-round pick in 2024.
However, Kent Hughes will still be penalized this year by this trade, as he no longer has the CH's selection, which should be among the top 10 in the second round for the upcoming draft.
A pick among the top 40 in a draft is major.
In three seasons in Montreal, Dvorak has a total of 68 points, including 24 goals, in 145 games. For a player who is paid like an average second center, this is a very disappointing offensive performance.
In addition to losing Phillip Danault, the CH also overpaid for a player who has practically no market value due to his performance and salary. Moreover, the effects of this Bergevin trade will be felt even three years later, forcing Hughes to lose a high draft pick.
As an indication of the disaster that could have occurred with this trade, fortunately, Bergevin had the foresight to include a clause in the first-round pick, since the club ended up with the first pick that year.
