We are now less than two months away from the NHL trade deadline. Excitement is starting to build behind the scenes, as several teams are quietly making their shopping lists for the end of the season, whether they are buyers or sellers.

Given the trend observed over the past few years, it becomes increasingly likely that major trades will materialize two or three weeks before this crucial deadline, so things could start heating up as early as February.
All eyes will certainly be on the Canadiens due to some hot topics, as the club still has a three-goalie situation to resolve, and several veterans are expected to change teams, including Sean Monahan.
As reported by Darren Dreger in recent hours, there is an agreement between Kent Hughes and Monahan regarding a trade during the season.
"I wouldn't be surprised to see Monahan be one of the first forwards to be traded before the trade deadline. You have to go back to the offseason when the Canadiens signed Sean Monahan. They had an agreement at that time that he would be traded when the time came to a competitive team or a team of his choice, nothing has changed on that." - Darren Dreger

So, it can be deduced that it's almost certain the 29-year-old veteran will change teams in the coming weeks.
Information regarding Dreger on number 91 was even corroborated by insider David Pagnotta, who claims that a team should be seriously considered for a potential trade involving Monahan: the Winnipeg Jets.
Being first in the overall standings, this organization will aim for the highest honors this year, and they have a glaring lack of depth at center. Plus, they have cap space, so the "fit" seems almost perfect for them.
Moreover, an obvious indication that discussions have taken place between the two clubs surfaced when Pagnotta also revealed that the Jets had sent two scouts to yesterday's game at the Bell Centre.
While teams regularly send scouts to games across the league, usually when there is more than one, it means they are taking the analysis of a player in question even more seriously.
Winnipeg has several very interesting elements in its pool of young talent that could certainly catch Kent Hughes' eye. Moreover, they have in their possession the Canadiens' second-round pick for the 2024 draft, which should be among the top 40 selections in June, given the club's current ranking.
It is quite possible that Hughes is very interested in this pick, which was involved in the Christian Dvorak trade in 2021.
