The Montreal Canadiens' rebuilding process involves significant deliberations about which players to trade or retain.

While it's easier to trade veterans, such decisions impact the team's culture. Trade speculations at the Tricolore include David Savard. At 33 years old and with one more season on his $3.5 million annual contract, it's clear that the Quebecer might be in his final stretch with the organization.
With a pool of young talents emerging, Savard will eventually need to make room. The question is whether it's the right time to capitalize on his high market value this year.
Savard recently broke his silence regarding the possibility of a change in teams.
«Right now, I'm in Montreal and I'd like to stay here. I like what we have as a group. I like the way the team is developing. I'd like to contribute to this team's success. We'll see if I can stay, but it's out of my control. I'm not going to waste my time worrying about it.» - David Savard

Sacrificing an important leader and mentor in the locker room is always a delicate matter.
However, given what he can bring to a team, his Stanley Cup experience, and his excellent performance this year, General Manager Kent Hughes will likely receive significant interest for him.
NHL rumors suggest that a trade involving the defenseman could yield a return similar to what the Canadiens got for Ben Chiarot – a first-round pick, a later pick, and a prospect.
Aware that an irresistible offer might prompt a trade, Savard anticipates a thorough discussion with Hughes.
«I don't pay attention to those things. I don't follow the rumors and stuff like that. If it's going to happen, it'll happen. I'm sure I won't be caught off guard. I'm pretty sure we'll have a discussion with Kent Hughes first. It's not something I'm worried about.» - David Savard

This shows the CH's deep respect for Savard. Yet, it's doubtful Hughes would let him go easily, considering the intangible elements he brings to the culture the organization wants to establish in Montreal.
