Pierre LeBrun Makes Major Announcement Regarding the 2018 World Juniors Scandal
The announcement of the players who will represent Canada at the 2024 World Junior Championship is indeed a reminder that the troubling case of the 2018 Canadian Junior Team is still unresolved. The hockey community is awaiting the conclusion of the NHL's investigation, and it's unclear what is delaying the release of the report.
Last month, Hockey Canada announced the appeal of their report's conclusions. Here's what was stated:
"Since this appeal process, which we anticipate starting in the near future, will be conducted behind closed doors, we are not in a position to share details of the report and its findings at this time, as doing so could compromise the integrity of the process. Until the conclusion of the appeal process, all players from the 2018 National Junior Team remain suspended from Hockey Canada and are currently ineligible as players, coaches, officials, or volunteers within programs sanctioned by the organization." - Hockey Canada
Pierre LeBrun, during his appearance on TSN's Insider Trading, explained that the NHL's investigation findings could also be appealed by the NHL Players' Association (NHLPA). Therefore, the NHL and NHLPA are negotiating so that the sanctions imposed on players are not appealed.
However, LeBrun believes that it's unlikely the two sides will reach an agreement if the police investigation does not lead to criminal charges. Does this imply that the NHL and NHLPA agree on the players' involvement and the culprits but not on the sanctions?
Meanwhile, the 2024 Canada Junior team is revealed
As mentioned earlier, the roster for the Canadian team for the upcoming holiday tournament has been unveiled. Owen Beck, the sole representative from the Montreal Canadiens, has been selected for Team Canada Junior 2024. The QMJHL is well represented with seven players, including six Quebecers. Goalies Mathis Rousseau and Samuel St-Hilaire, defensemen Maveric Lamoureux, Tristan Luneau, Noah Warren, and forward Jordan Dumais are among the selected. Nova Scotia defenseman Jake Furlong will be one of the four QMJHL defensemen on Team Canada Junior.
As we await the outcome of negotiations between the NHLPA and NHL, as per Pierre LeBrun, regarding appropriate sanctions for the implicated players, we hope that the 2024 edition will provide exciting moments and talking points with their on-ice performances!
