Massive Name on Waivers: Kent Hughes Has the Opportunity to Acquire a 25-Goal Scorer for Free
Yesterday afternoon, an improbable turn of events occurred in the NHL. While many well-informed sources in the hockey world had mentioned that Jakub Vrana would be placed on waivers, the St. Louis Blues ultimately decided to keep him with the team.
Such situations are rare, especially in sports journalism where information is usually verified before being made public. It's possible that there were last-minute developments preventing the Blues' general manager from placing him on waivers.
However, just when it seemed this story was behind us and that, barring a trade, Jakub Vrana would remain a member of the Blues organization, a new twist has emerged. Chris Johnston has just confirmed that the 27-year-old forward is indeed placed on waivers, making him available for free to all teams in the Bettman circuit.
"Placed on NHL waivers today: Jakub Vrana (STL)." - Chris Johnston
Wow! This was completely unexpected!
So, it's now official, Jakub Vrana is on waivers, and he could very well change teams in the next few hours. It will be interesting to see if Montreal Canadiens' general manager Kent Hughes considers claiming this offensive forward.
With the numerous injuries currently affecting the Montreal attack, there's no doubt that the former Detroit Red Wings and Washington Capitals forward could provide a serious boost to the Canadiens' top-6.
Here are Jakub Vrana's statistics for the past seasons:
· 2019-2020: 27 goals and 25 assists (52 points) in 69 games
· 2020-2021: 19 goals and 17 assists (36 points) in 50 games
· 2021-2022: 13 goals and 6 assists (19 points) in 26 games
· 2022-2023: 11 goals and 5 assists (16 points) in 25 games
· 2023-2024: 2 goals and 4 assists (6 points) in 14 games
Furthermore, considering that the forward is currently in the last year of his contract valued at $5.25 million per season (however 50% is retained, thus meaning there is a cap hit of $2,625,000), the financial risk would be virtually non-existent for the Canadiens, who will become a free agent at the end of the current season.
Certainly, this will be a situation to closely watch until tomorrow at 2 PM.
