Major Acquisitions for the Canadiens: Experts Confirm That Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton Have Been Able to Get Their Hands on Three First-Round Talents
During the 2022 draft held in Montreal, the Canadiens had two first-round picks. They chose Juraj Slafkovsky with the very first pick and Filip Mesar with the 26th overall.
Corey Pronman, a prospect evaluation expert for The Athletic, amusingly redrafted the 2022 draft with the information now available.
Although it's still too early to assert anything, it's always interesting to see the players' progression and the impact on their draft positions two years later. The big question is, how are the Montreal Canadiens faring?
In 2022, the CH had two 1st round picks (1st and 26th) and two 2nd round picks (33rd and 62nd):
1st: Juraj Slavkofsky
26th: Filip Mesar
33rd: Owen Beck
62nd: Lane Hutson
According to Pronman, the selection order of the four players from the Canadiens is now:
1st: Juraj Slavkofsky (0)
25th: Lane Hutson (↑37)
29th: Owen Beck (↑4)
63rd: Filip Mesar (↓37)
It's both surprising and reassuring to see that Slafkovsky remains the first choice in Pronman's eyes.
Lane Hutson jumps 37 places to land in the first round. In contrast, Filip Mesar moves in the opposite direction, plummeting 37 places from 26th to 63rd. Owen Beck would be the 29th player drafted, an improvement of four places from his initial ranking.
The most significant improvement in the Canadiens is the small defenseman Miguel Tourigny, who according to Pronman, would now be the last pick of the 3rd round. An impressive leap of 151 places from the 216th pick in 2022 to the 65th overall, if the draft were redone.
Also, Adam Engstrom sees an improvement, moving from the 92nd selection to become the 67th player selected by Pronman, a notable improvement of 25 places.
Here's what would now make up Corey Pronman's TOP 10:
1- Juraj Slafkovsky (0)
2- David Jiricek (↑4)
3- Logan Cooley (0)
4- Shane Wright (0)
5- Kevin Korchinski (↑2)
6- Cutter Gauthier (↓1)
7- Simon Nemec (↓5)
8- Pavel Mintyukov (↑2)
9- Marco Kasper (↓1)
10- Filip Bystedt (↑17)
Even though this exercise is completely futile, it's still interesting to note that the players drafted in 2022 by the Montreal Canadiens are performing well and, for the most part, seeing their draft rankings improve.
