Two major news items for the Canadiens before the market opens
The Montreal Canadiens, along with other NHL teams, are preparing for the opening of free agency on July 1st.
Just before players officially become free agents, two forwards courted by the Canadiens have signed new contracts.
Freshly acquired from the Lightning, Jake Guentzel has reached a deal with Julien BriseBois. He will therefore not be available for other teams in the market.
Patrick Kane has also extended his contract for another season with the Detroit Red Wings. According to Frank Seravalli, the Canadiens were keenly interested in the veteran forward. Kane could have been a valuable mentor for young offensive talents.
Remaining on Kent Hughes's radar are Jonathan Marchessault, Steven Stamkos, and perhaps Sam Reinhart.
After a relatively quiet weekend in terms of acquisitions, several reports suggest that the Canadiens could take action this week.
