The Los Angeles Kings have just announced a five-year contract extension for their young forward Quinton Byfield, with an annual salary of $6.25 million.

This signing was expected to influence that of Juraj Slafkovsky of the Montreal Canadiens. However, Kent Hughes took the initiative by signing the Slovak before the Kings' announcement.
Byfield, a second-round pick in 2020, is often compared to Slafkovsky, the first overall pick in 2022. Both players have similar profiles, but Slafkovsky achieved his performances at a younger age.
With this extension, Hughes has managed to keep Slafkovsky in Montreal for three more years than Byfield in Los Angeles, for just $1.3 million more per year.
Additionally, Byfield will be a free agent at 26 years old after his contract ends, a scenario Hughes avoided for Slafkovsky, thereby solidifying an advantage for the Canadiens.
