Before being dismissed, Marc Bergevin left a nice gift for the Canadiens

After a decade at the helm, the prospect of a team rebuild made it challenging to retain his position.

While his draft choices were sometimes criticized, it's hard to fault the selections of players like Cole Caufield, Kaiden Guhle, and Logan Mailloux.

Another successful move by the former general manager was acquiring Quebecois goaltender Samuel Montembeault. Indeed, shortly before his departure, Bergevin claimed Montembeault off waivers, a decision that could pay off in the long run.

According to Jesse Granger, based on advanced statistics, Montembeault deserved to be in the discussion for the Vezina Trophy last season, even if he wasn't expected to be among the finalists.

Granger highlights Montembeault's consistency as one of the reasons why the Canadiens lost many games by only a single goal.
