Samuel Montembault Makes a Major Statement on His Start in the Canadiens Organization: Was He Nearly Headed to the ECHL?
Samuel Montembeault has been the star of the Montreal Canadiens in the past few hours, following an incredible performance against the New York Rangers.
He is quietly making his place among the legitimate number one goaltenders in the NHL, and this season will be a very important one in his career.
Now 27 years old, it was not an easy journey for the Quebecer, who has gone through several significant moments since his professional debut, before establishing himself as Carey Price's successor in Montreal.
At the time of his waiver claim from Florida by the Canadiens in 2021, no one could have predicted such a scenario a few years later.
Even Montembeault himself made a striking statement about his arrival in the Montreal organization. In a press conference, after Saturday's victory, he was asked about what fans were saying about him at that time.
Here is his astonishing response:
"Most of them said I was at best an AHL goaltender when I arrived here. When I bought my house in Trois-Rivières, people said it was perfect because it would be perfect and close for playing in the ECHL (with the Trois-Rivières Lions)." - via Eric Engels, Sportsnet
Hopefully, those who believed this about Monty have now made their mea culpa, now that he is the main goalkeeper of the Canadiens. He clearly proved wrong many people who must regret not having believed in him.
Moreover, due to his young age and his recent three-year contract extension, he will be for a good while on top of that!
This also testifies to his evolution and the extent of his progress since his arrival at the Canadiens.
