Samuel Montembault Drops a Bombshell About His Future in Montreal
Over the past few days, several observers, such as Arpon Basu and Eric Engels, have confirmed that Kent Hughes and the agent of Samuel Montembeault, Paul Corbeil, have started discussions regarding a possible contract extension for the Quebec goaltender.
Moreover, during his weekly column on the BPM Sports website, Réjean Tremblay revealed that the Canadiens' goalie wanted to obtain a more lucrative contract than his counterpart Jake Allen. Indeed, the number 35 would like to sign a new deal with an annual salary of around four million dollars.
Although his salary demands may seem high for a goalie who, despite good performances, has not yet proven that he can definitely become a number one in the NHL, Kent Hughes is currently in a very delicate situation.
Unless there is a trade to acquire a new goalkeeper, the general manager is almost obliged to grant him a contract given that Jake Allen will most likely play his last season with the Bleu-Blanc-Rouge in 2024-2025.
However, Samuel Montembeault made a very interesting statement when he was recently asked about his contractual situation. The goalie indicated that he wanted above all to obtain a certain stability, adding that he would very much like to remain with the CH for the rest of his career.
"So, stability above all?
"Yes, probably, if I could spend the rest of my career here, I would be happy." - Samuel Montembeault
Wow! A statement that says a lot about his sense of belonging to the city of Montreal, but which could also play a decisive role in the negotiations. If Kent Hughes is ready to offer him a multi-season contract extension, would the 27-year-old goalie agree to lower his salary demands to ensure he stays in Montreal longer?
Certainly, this will be a crucial file to settle with the approach of the trade deadline and it will be very interesting to see how the GM of the Canadiens will want to proceed with his goalie.
