For the second consecutive game, Quebecois goaltender Samuel Montembeault was in front of the Canadiens' net last night.

Moreover, despite a 2-1 loss to the powerful Edmonton Oilers, the 27-year-old netminder was simply sensational, stopping 39 of the 41 shots directed at him to allow Martin St-Louis' men to collect an additional point in the standings.
If the Canadiens had a constant rotation in the early part of the season, the goaltender situation is now much clearer. It is now beyond doubt that Monty is the number one goaltender in the organization, having started five of the last seven games.
However, journalist Simon-Olivier Lorange made a very interesting remark regarding the use of Montreal's goaltenders, suggesting that the Bleu-Blanc-Rouge would definitely have a new number two, and it would be Cayden Primeau.
"For the 5th time in 10 games, Jake Allen is not in uniform. In the meantime:

ˇ Montembeault: 5 starts, 2 times backup
ˇ Primeau: 3 starts, 5 times backup
ˇ Allen: 2 starts, 3 times backup

The hierarchy seems to be taking shape." - Simon-Olivier Lorange

Everything suggests that Martin St-Louis has finally made a decision, relegating Jake Allen to the third goaltender position. Cayden Primeau's recent performances may have convinced the head coach, as Cayden Primeau seems to have surpassed the 33-year-old veteran in the team's hierarchy.
It's quite surprising to see this, especially since the former St. Louis Blues player was the number one to start the 2022-2023 season and was also in the running for the starting goaltender role just a few months ago.
Of course, this demotion may affect his trade value, but after all, the head coach was hired to win games. As of writing these lines, Samuel Montembeault and Cayden Primeau are the two goaltenders who offer the best chance for the Canadiens to add points to the standings.
Statistics of the three goaltenders this season:

ˇ Samuel Montembeault: 20 starts | Record of 9-6-4 | Goals against average of 2.89 | Save percentage of 0.909

ˇ Cayden Primeau: 9 starts | Record of 4-4-1 | Goals against average of 3.13 | Save percentage of 0.905

ˇ Jake Allen: 14 starts | Record of 4-8-2 | Goals against average of 3.52 | Save percentage of 0.900

With Cayden Primeau shining more and more, it will be interesting to see if Kent Hughes wants to leverage his value for a more attractive return or fully trust him by trading Jake Allen to another team.
