Canadiens to Place Expensive Player on Waivers? A Reporter Has Revealed this Shocking Possibility

With the Montreal Canadiens extending goaltender Samuel Montembeault's contract for three seasons, a decision on the team's goaltending situation involving Jake Allen and Cayden Primeau still looms. Head coach Martin St-Louis recently announced that Montembeault would start for the second consecutive game, effectively making him the team's number one goalie for the time being.

This decision reduces the opportunities for Allen and Primeau to showcase their abilities. Given that Montembeault is now the primary goalie, GM Kent Hughes faces a crucial decision regarding Allen and Primeau's future with the team.

Former Quebec Nordiques coach Michel Bergeron, speaking on TVA Sports, suggested a bold solution: placing the 33-year-old Allen on waivers to allow Montembeault and Primeau more NHL playing time.

"When I learned this afternoon that finally, they are giving him (Montembeault) the game, a second one in the same week, you just anointed him as number one. Let's resolve the Allen situation. He hasn't been with the Canadiens for 15 years! He came here to fill in. Now, the solution is waivers. Let's stop whether we like him or not, we are in the National Hockey League. He's a good veteran, he will do what Armia did. He will play, he will work, hoping another team (claims him)." - Michel Bergeron

Bergeron's approach is certainly daring. However, it's unlikely that Hughes would opt for this route, especially given Allen's valuable contributions to the team in recent years. Hughes has proven adept at making trades, and a deal involving Allen, possibly with salary retention, could be more beneficial for the Canadiens.
