Disaster in Calgary: Kent Hughes is to Blame for the Crumbling of the Canadian Franchise
Every year, trades occur between teams in the National Hockey League, some of which, in the best of worlds, are great deals for both parties, while others age poorly for one of them.
This is currently the case for the Calgary Flames, much to the delight of Kent Hughes.
Let's recall that in August 2022, the Alberta organization outright gave Sean Monahan, along with a valuable first-round pick, absolutely free to the Canadiens, in exchange for absorbing the last year of the veteran's contract.
Calgary had to make this trade in order to finalize a deal with unrestricted free agent Nazem Kadri, for $7M. It's also worth noting that a few days earlier, the Flames had signed Jonathan Huberdeau for a hefty price of $10.5M.
However, over a year later, this trade, in addition to the two major signings, is proving disastrous for the franchise. Here's an analysis of the situation so far this season:
"Sean Monahan has 9 points in his first 10 games of the season, and he has a +6 differential for the Habs - in addition to producing on special teams.
The Flames gave up a 1st round pick to the Canadiens to get rid of Monahan the same summer they added Huberdeau and Kadri.
Combined, Huberdeau and Kadri currently have 9 points and a differential of -23.
Ouch!"
In essence, they handed Sean Monahan and his $6.375M for one year, with a first-round pick, to the Canadiens, to sign Kadri and Huberdeau for a total of $17.5M, who together don't even offer better performance than him at the moment.
The worst part is that the Flames are also struggling collectively, ranking second to last in the Western Conference with a dismal record of 2-7-1 after ten games.
Things are souring in Calgary, and Kent Hughes is one of the main culprits!
